Francis Peyre Porcher papers, 1801-1888.

Papers consist of correspondence, a prescription book (1856-1861), commonplace books, scientific notes, clippings, and other items. Correspondence (1801-1959) consists primarily of Porcher family letters regarding family matters, Francis P. Porcher's education, and other topics. Included are copies of a letter (1864) from Francis P. Porcher to his sons concerning proper behavior, manners, and duties of young men; professional correspondence (1869-1888) of Francis P. Porcher on botany and Porcher's book "Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests"; and a letter (1801) from Francis Peyre concerning the illness of his wife Mary. Other correspondents include Peter Cordes Porcher, Isabella S. Porcher, and Julian Henry Porcher. Commonplace book (1843-1882, bulk 1843-1845) of Francis P. Porcher contains quotations, literary passages, and excerpts from works on various subjects such as history, philosophy, and literary criticism; a poem dated 1882 is inscribed on the last two pages. A commonplace book (1874-ca. 1903) bears the name "Margaret Bentley Ward" (later Margaret Porcher) but also contains entries by other family members; book contains literary passages, religious commentary, poems, pressed flowers and leaves (gathered "out on a walk with Dr. Porcher, Aug. 8th 1878"), a lock of hair, notes on family history, photographs, and transcriptions of letters and the "Autobiography of Francis Peyre Porcher." There are also clippings, drawings, and family letters pasted into the book. Another commonplace book (n.d.) of Francis P. Porcher contains quotations, definitions, and notes on topics such as history and science. Scientific notes pertain to Porcher's botanical studies and include notes for "Resources of the Southern Fields and Forests." Among these papers there are also clippings of reviews of Porcher's book and clippings concerning medicinal plants and other subjects. Printed material includes an article (1880) by Porcher about heart disease. Other items include biographical notes, clippings, and printed material about Porcher, and a patent (1870) for tanning and dyeing agents.

Francis Peyre Porcher was born in Charleston, South Carolina on December 14, 1824 to William and Isabella Sarah Peyre Porcher. Through his mother's side, he was a descendant of the botanist, Thomas Walter author of Flora Caroliniana. Porcher graduated from the South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina) in 1844 and from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1847.
